GM Alexander Ivanov won Saturday's Dr. Luzivminda Machan Open X, which featured 9 titled players.

LM Sam Barsky and expert Mauricio Camejo tied for 2nd. FM Rodion Rubenchik and NM Praveen Balakrishnan tied for 4th.

Connor Riddell won the U2000 and Biggest Upset prizes.

LM James West and expert Mauricio Camejo tied for 1st in the top group of yesterday's G/30.

David Zhurbinsky won the 2nd section with 3.0/3.

Rubenchik Wins Machan Open IX

FM Rodion Rubenchik won Saturday's Dr. Luzivminda Machan Open IX, a half-point ahead of Ted Belanoff.

FM Boris Privman, Kuberan Naganathan and Anthony Norris tied for 3rd. Naganathan also scored the biggest upset. In round 1, he defeated LM James West.

The U1400 prize went to Nikita Popov.

Rubenchik Wins Machan Open VIII

FM Rodion Rubenchik won yesterday's Dr. Luvizminda Machan Open, with 3.5/4.

LM James West, Ted Belanoff, Mauricio Camejo and Aravind Kumar tied for 2nd. With his result, Belanoff raised his rating to 2200 and became a National Master but a re-rate left him 1 point short of NM level.


Anthony Norris was the U2000 prize-winner and Brandon Ng was the top U1400.

John Moldovan's opening round draw with West was the biggest upset.

West Wins Grand Prix

LM James West won yesterday's Dr. Luvizminda Machan Grand Prix with a 4-0 score. It was his first-ever Grand Prix victory.

NM Arthur Macaspac was the runner-up. Sameer Mujumdar and Mauricio Camejo tied for 3rd. John Moldovan received U2000 honors.

Brandon Ng earned the U1600 prize and notched the biggest upset, by beating Dan Komunicky in round 4.

Delay In Submitting Grand Prix Results

Due to problems with the USCF's TD/Affiliate Area, which has been down some 4 hours, we cannot upload data from today's Grand Prix.

Our ailing director, who neglected to bring his flash-drive and must now re-enter all the results into Win-TD, will try again tomorrow morning.

Update 11/18 @ 10:11 a.m. - The event was uploaded to the USCF and submitted for rating at 7:43 a.m. It should appear here by 11 o'clock.

4-Way Tie In Dr. Machan Grand Prix

IM Ilye Figler, LM Sam Barsky, LM Vladimir Polyakin and NM Arthur Macaspac won today's Dr. Luvizminda Machan Grand Prix.

Tony Norris was best U2000. Brandon Ng and Claude Rainford split the U1400 prize.

Claude also scored the biggest upset, with a 4th round win over Karandeep Singh.

Chess Mates has canceled the Dr. Luvizminda Machan Grand Prix XI scheduled for Friday, December 28th, because the date in our TLA is incorrect.

We will be running our Winter Camp on the 28th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will be closed on Saturday, December 29th.

Chess Mates is still out of electricity following Hurricane Sandy. Therefore, we are cancelling tonight's Blitz tournament and tomorrow's Quads.

However, if our power comes back on later today, we may run the Saturday G/45, after all. Please check this blog, our Facebook page and your email for possible updates.

IM Ilye Figler, FM Rodion Rubenchik, FM Boris Privman, NM Praveen Balakrishnan and NM Sam Barsky tied for 1st at today's Rahway Open.

Jennifer Acon won the U2000 prize while Chris Farmer earned U1700 honors. Michael O'Connor's 3rd round win over Rishi Rajendran was the biggest upset.

There were 17 participants.

Serge Adelson won the G/90 for October, which wrapped up about an hour ago. NM Arthur Macaspac and Raja Ghosh tied for 2nd, with Raja getting the U2000 prize.

Lou Sturniolo, Claude Rainford and Leonardo Moreira shared U1800 honors. Lou also scored the biggest upset, by beating Michael O'Connor tonight.

IM Ilye Figler, FM Boris Privman and NM Arthur Macaspac tied for 1st in yesterday's Dr. Luvizminda Machan Grand Prix.

Ari Minkov (1993) was 4th. Ramon Garcia (1906) & Michael O'Connor (1739) split the U2000 prize. Kevin Huang (1516) was the U1600 winner. U1250 honors went to Alexander Xue (1245 on the September supplement) and Darshan Patel (910).

Alexander Xue also scored the biggest upset. In round 1 he defeated Howard Weiss, who out-rated him by more than 700 points.

Weiss Wins Sunday G/30

Expert Howard Weiss ended a 13-year absence from tournament chess by winning last Sunday's G/30 at Chess Mates.

Yesterday's G/45 Quads attracted 16 players. Arthur Macaspac, Sam Barsky and Vladimir Polyakin tied for 1st in the top group. William Greif was clear winner in section 2.

Antoine Khan and Harpal Maini won section 3, which was run as an 8-player swiss. Karandeep Singh and Ramneek Singh split the U1200 prize.

Bartell & Rubenchik Win Grand Prix

FIDE Masters Tom Bartell and Rodion Rubenchik tied for 1st in yesterday's Dr. Luvizminda Machan Grand Prix III.

There was a 6-way tie for 3rd among IM Ilye Figler, FM Boris Privman, Lev Zilbermintz, Sergio Flores, Jeremiah Williams and Thomas Elberling. The latter 4 shared U2200 honors.

Nicole Yen (1070) won the U1800 and biggest upset prizes. In the last round she defeated 1897-rated Jeyson Flores!

Sarah Yen (993) had the top U1400 score and Kesava Dhanasekaran (497) was best U1000.

There were 26 players in all, a Chess Mates record. The previous high was 20 on July 18, 2010.

Congratulations to all the prize-winners and thanks to everyone for playing.

Camp Tourney Correction Update

A time-control correction to the Spring Break Camp I Tourney was submitted to the USCF on April 23. We are still waiting for them to rate the event as a G/30.

New Schedule

Starting May 1, Chess Mates will be closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The only exception is a Memorial Weekend Camp session on Mon. 5/28.

Our regular schedule of events will be:

Wednesdays - Lesson 5 p.m., G/90 7 p.m.
Fridays -  Lesson 5 p.m., G/90 7 p.m.
Saturdays - Camp 9 a.m., G/45 Quads 1:30 p.m, Blitz Tournament 7 p.m.
Sundays - Camp 10 a.m., G/30 Quads 3:00 p.m, Advanced Lesson 6:10 p.m., Blitz Tournament 7:15 p.m.

The entry fees for the G/30 and G/45 quads will be $20 members, $15 non-members.

Prizes will be $55 for 1st place in each section.
