On New Year's Eve (Saturday 12/31), Chess Mates will be running a blitz tournament with 100% of entry fees returned as prizes. Food will be provided, too! The action begins at 7 p.m.

Winter Camp Discounts

Our Winter Camp is fast approaching. This will be a week long camp beginning December 26 and running through Dec. 30. Grand Master Yudasin will be the head instructor and National Master Arthur Macaspac will be assisting.
 
We are giving discounts to club members (10% off) and those registered by Dec. 24th (5% off). This info was left out of our previous flyer.

ECC-Chess Mates Postponed Again

The match between Essex County College and Chess Mates has been postponed, again.

Sunday Open Quads Moving To Earlier Time

Beginning Sunday, January 1, we will be holding our Open G/30 Quads from 3-6 p.m., alongside our Scholastic G/30 Quads.

1st prize in each quad (Open & Scholastic) will now be $30 or a trophy. The entry fee remains at $10 for Chess Mates members/$15 for non-members.

Pena & Kellinsky-Gonzalez Tie In Scholastic

Joel Pena and Kevin Kellinsky-Gonzalez tied for 1st in yesterday's Scholastic G/30. Neil Mehta and Albert Tang tied for 3rd.

Barsky, Macaspac & Flores Tie In U2200

Expert Sam Barsky, NM Arthur Macaspac and Jeyson Flores tied for 1st in yesterday's 10-player U2200 Swiss.

Jonathan Aisoni, Sriram Kumar and Gaby Marani split the U1400 prize.

The event will be submitted for rating later today or tomorrow.

Lessons For Advanced Players

Beginning in January, GM Leonid Yudasin's lessons for advanced players will take place from 6-7 p.m. every Sunday evening. The fee for the hour of instruction is $15.

ECC-Chess Mates Re-scheduled

The postponed match between Essex County College and Chess Mates has been re-scheduled. It will be played in Rahway, on Friday, December 23rd, at 8:00 p.m.

Yudasin Wins Wednesday Blitz

GM Leonid Yudasin won Wednesday's strong, unrated blitz tournament ahead of NM Maraj Daftani. NM Arthur Macaspac and expert Lev Zilbermintz split the U2200 prize.

Warren Lohr (1756) and Michael O'Connor (1714) won Saturday's U1800 Tournament with 3.5/4. Ryan Hoang (1520) finished 3rd.

Chess Mates Fall To Newark

In Friday night's Garden State Chess League action, Chess Mates lost to Newark-McDonalds 3-1. Roger Pedersen's win on board 2 was our only bright spot.

Joseph Holmak (1687) won today's G/45 Swiss with 3.5/4 score. Jarrett Dewelde finished 2nd. Don Varneckas was 3rd.

Yearly Membership Dues Reduced

Chess Mates has reduced its membership rates.

Beginning November 1st, they will be:

Adult: $85 per year.
Senior (62 and up): $65 per year.
Youth (18 and Under): $65 per year.

Membership benefits include entry fee discounts, access to the club, use of our equipment and books.

October Calendar

Our calendar for October, which includes several new events, has been posted on this blog's sidebar.

New Tuesday Swiss

Beginning October 4th, Chess Mates will be running month-long Tuesday Swiss tournaments with time controls of 40/75 followed by SD/15.

1 game per week
Entry Fee: $25 ($20 for our members)
Prizes: 70% of EF, based on the # of participants.

Chess Mates Adds Friday Blitz

Beginning October 7th, Chess Mates will be running blitz tournaments on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights.

Chess Mates' Sunday Camps

Starting on October 2nd, GM Leonid Yudasin will be conducting camps at Chess Mates every other Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The prices for each camp are as follows:

Full camp
$80 for our members, $90 for non-members.

Includes lunch, snacks and free entry to the Scholastic Quads that will run from 3-6 p.m.

Partial camp
10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.: $75
10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.: $40
12:30 pm. - 3 p.m.: $40
One hour: $20

Partial camp does not include lunch, snacks or tournament entry.

Children not attending the full camp may enter the Scholastic Quad for $15 ($10 for our members)

Anyone who registers for the camp 4 days in advance will receive $5 off.

Yudasin & Norowitz Win Anniversary Tourney

GM Leonid Yudasin & SM Yaacov Norowitz shared 1st place in Chess Mates' Anniversary Tournament, with 3.5/4. IM Justin Sarkar, FM Arthur Shen & NM Jim West tied for 3rd, a half-point back.

Sarkar & Shen split the U2400 money. Anna Matlin was awarded the U2200 prize. The U2000 spoils were divided among Praveen Balakrishnan, Eve Zhurbinskiy, Jason Fredericks and Roger Pedersen.

Sameer Mujumdar directed, with assistance from John Moldovan & Pedersen.

West Orange Krush, winners of last month's USATE tourney in Parsippany, will be competing in the U.S. Amateur Team playoffs today at Chess Mates, starting at 1 p.m. The games will be broadcast on the Internet Chess Club.

New Schedule

Chess Mates has changed its schedule and overhauled its tournament calendar.

We are now open on Friday night... closed on Tuesday and Thursday.

Our new tournament schedule is:

Sundays, 10:30 a.m. - 5-round G/45 Swiss or 3-round G/30 Quads, as listed on the sidebar
Mondays, 8 p.m. - G/5 Blitz
Wednesdays, 8 p.m. - G/5 Blitz for U2200
Fridays, 7 p.m. - G/30 Quads
Saturdays, 1 p.m. - G/60 Scholastic Quads and Open Quads

Grandmaster Leonid Yudasin will be giving lessons prior to most Blitz events and a simul on the last Monday of the month.
